The first meal we will highlight will be the hamburger. The hamburger was established in New York to attract German sailors because this meal lasted for a long time and was somewhat familiar. These burgers were not like today’s burgers; they were like a piece of salty steak. The first hamburger restaurant was established in New York and the ones where they were sold at 10 cents. The image that comes to mind when we say hamburger was formed in 1885, when people wanted to walk with their food when they were at the fairs, and the vendor put the meat between two pieces of bread. . Nowadays it is disputed where and who invented it, but they did it with the same purpose. In 1904 during the Louisiana Purchase exhibition, the hamburger became famous in the United States. During the 4th of July, families always come together to eat this delicacy with various condiments, such as vegetables, bacon or onions.
Another traditional meal would be the chicken wings. The truth about the history of chicken wings is also disputed but popular belief says that Teressa Bellisimo had to make a meal for her son at night and improvised the chicken wings. All this happened in Anchor Bar Bufallo, New York and from there they got their name. They are quite popular in the United States. In the celebrations of the 4th of July, it is common to see many people enjoying the chicken wings; There are even competitions about the hottest chicken wings.
The accompaniments of these meals are pork with beans ( pork and beans ) and coleslaw . In a recipe book of 1832 called The American Frugal Housewife there were only 3 ingredients: beans, pork, and pepper. Before the pork with beans was entirely homemade; then they were marketed in 1885, but they did not become popular until 1895. Today, Campbell Soup Company sells more than 100 million cans of pork with beans, or pork and beans, per year. The pork with beans / pork and beans is emblematic of a July 4th celebration, and is usually served with hot dogs. The ColeslawWine of Dutch immigrants and since that time has become one of the most popular accompaniments in barbecues, dinners in the park, and of course on July 4th. Coleslaw has been part of American literature since 1785 and that tradition is still alive. The coleslaw is made of cabbage and mayonnaise, and you can also add whatever you want to your coleslaw. Here are some recipes to please your palate.
To finish or during your 4th of July celebration there are always these snacks. Many of the world’s popcorn come from the Midwest of the United States. The first popcorn beans were found in Bat Cave (Cueva Murciélago) in New Mexico, United States. Some theories say that a Native American called Quadequina brought popcorn as a peace offering between them and the colonizers. In the native folklore of the United States, the popcorn kernels had a spirit inside and when the spirit got angry, the popcorn jumped. In addition, the wives of colonizers served popcorn with cream and sugar as a cereal. In the 1890s, popcorn was marketed and its vendors sat in front of stores with gas burners. This tradition continued until the Great Depression. The launching of movie theaters in conjunction with popcorn sales increased its popularization as an American snack. On top of that, in 1950, the proliferation of televisions at home changed the lifestyle of the Americans and brought the popcorn home. Nowadays, it is a main snack.
Ice cream is another main meal they always have at Independence Day celebrations. In 1770 the first ice cream factory was made in New York. Before this, versions of ice cream were already circulating in the United States. Elizabeth Hamilton, wife of Alexander Hamilton, Secretary of Treasury, served ice cream and from there spent 200 dollars on ice cream that summer. Then he began to serve him at the White House dinners. In 1832, Augustus Jackson, an African-American, created the modern method of making ice cream and new flavors. In these times Philadelphia was known as the ice cream capital. In 1926, Clarence Vogt of Louisville, Kentucky invented the first successful freezer and this increased mass production. During the Second World War they used ice cream, candy, chewing gum, and tobacco to encourage the morale of the soldiers.
All these meals teach them a little of our culture and our palate, and the great richness of the food ‘of independence’.
